Corey Coleman, Cody Lattimer and Russell Shepard all have a chance to make an impact, though 5th round draft pick Darius Slayton will possibly keep one of them off the roster this season. You can see Reagors style with the ball in his hands is similar to a RB, with sharp cuts and good vision picking out running lanes to get 19 yards after the catch. Tate also does a good job maintaining awareness of the QB and tracking the ball almost the entire time its in the air. * 21+ (19+ CA-ONT) (18+ NH/WY). The prospect with perhaps the best potential to become a true No. But in todays NFL, it is better to be quick with great acceleration out of a break or a cut. He loses close to the line of scrimmage to CBs like Josh Norman who are even more physical than he is. Tate is rarely asked to block in the run game, but is a willing and physical blocker when put in that role. Up next in the divisional depth chart review is the NFC East wide receivers. As it pertains to this season specifically, Diggs has not slowed down, leading the league with 10 receiving TDs when aligned wide. The Redskins probably have the least recognizable names in the division, even though the squad features former first round pick Josh Doctson and last years relatively high-profile free agent signing, Paul Richardson. See where he lands in the Next Gen Stats analytics team's ranking of the top 10 slot receivers right now. This year, were going to look at the division again, but were gonna try to ramp things up a bit by adding some film review to some of the position group reviews. Washington Football Team running back Antonio Gibson has emerged as a very efficient catcher out the backfield, if he can raise his yardage he can transform into an all round running back. The QB play in particular has been cause for concern, with 3 of the 4 teams in the division entering the offseason with questions around the position. Not all the players listed will make the team, and I might easily miss especially for the Redskins division rivals players who will make the Week 1 roster, but this list should give some idea of the relative depth of the four positional groups. Reagor was selected by the Eagles in the 1st round of the 2020 draft. Although the ball is placed right on his hands, he makes an ugly drop and misses out on a big play. And Lamb came out of the gate with a 74-catch rookie season. Thats insane. Dallas Cowboys receiver Amari Cooper edges out the competition to place as the NFC East's best receiver. He was also a competent kick returner, with 9 returns for 189 yards (21.0 Y/R). I think smart, physical CBs will give JJ trouble in the NFL as well, at least early in his development. This play highlights Richardsons deep threat ability, change-of-direction, ball tracking, body positioning, leaping ability, and strong hands at the catch point. Indeed, the only games where he had less than a 50% catch rate were against the Patriots and Lions, where he was shadowed by Stephon Gilmore and Darius Slay respectively. Commanders Reacts Survey: Do you want to see the Washington Commanders on Hard Knocks in 2023. Washington Football Team Terry McLaurin has solidified himself as one of the best young receivers in the NFL. It's really impressive. Taking a closer look at his peers we can see Jalen Reagor the Philadelphia Eagle's 21st overall pick in the previous draft is experiencing regular rookie growing pains. However, he has a limited route tree and doesnt show much subtlety in terms of using fakes, counters, leverage, body-positioning, or physicality to get open. Sometimes he would make an incredible contested catch, then in the same game have the ball hit him in the hands and bounce into a nearby DB for an interception. This play showcases McLaurins acceleration, route running, hands-catching ability, and top-end speed. At the Combine, he had posted a very good 4.42s 40-yard dash (showing good deep speed), but also produced an elite 6.71s 3-cone drill (agility), and 3.98s 20 yard shuttle (acceleration). Tate then stares down safety Jeff Heath and fakes inside to set him up before cutting outside, breaking another tackle attempt as he accelerates quickly to the endzone. On the short end of the NFC East receivers, the Giants and Eagles have an average height of 72.2 inches, or 6 feet. Slayton doesnt fake inside before breaking outside, he doesnt fight for inside leverage while running down the sideline, he doesnt body out Gilmore when he jumps for the ball, he doesnt grip the ball strong enough that Gilmore cant knock it out of his hands. Speaking of needing things to go right, Dave Gettleman shocked the NFL world (or didnt, based on which Twitter reports you were reading and believing) by trading Odell Beckham Jr. to Cleveland. [2:32] Jeffery lines up outside with the CB giving him lots of cushion. In our continuing series of ranking the players at different positions in the NFC West and also ranking the teams at each position, we now take a look at the four teams . Sims caught 32 passes last year and Harmon had a promising rookie season in 2019 before an ACL tear forced him to miss last year. DAVANTE ADAMS, LAS VEGAS RAIDERS The former Green Bay Packer is at the top of his game as he makes the move to the Las Vegas Raiders. Gallup had 59 for 843 and 5 as third option. He has enough speed to get open deep, but also the physicality and jump ball ability to make himself open in contested short-yardage plays. That speed, paired with Mike McDaniels innovative play-calling, has led to Waddles success on downfield passes, where he ranks fourth in the NFL with 741 receiving yards (trailing Hill, Davante Adams and Justin Jefferson). Jeffery is the closest thing to a WR1 on the Eagles offense. Every team has at least one . Who's the Best Wide Receiver in the NFL? Former Jacksonville Jaguar Allen Hurns, who hasnt been able to break 500 yards in a season since 2015, when he put up 1,031 yards and 10 TDs, is probably the headliner of the bottom half of the depth chart. 1. 28 Feb 2023 13:06:39 Although Doug Pedersons scheme spreads the ball around rather than funneling it to a specific target, its clear that Jeffery is the most trusted target on many Eagles plays. Of course, no position group consists of just one star player. Nicki Jhabvala (@NickiJhabvala) February 28, 2023. St. Brown has also provided a safety blanket for Goff when teams blitz (which they often do). He has enough deep speed that opposing DBs have to respect the deep pass and will often sell out to defend it, giving Cooper a good amount of cushion. In addition to showing Tates change-of-direction ability yet again, this play shows his improvisational ability and persistence. Wide Receiver: Terry McLaurin, Washington Commanders, CeeDee Lamb, Dallas Cowboys, and A.J. NOTE: The composite score for each player is based on a series of advanced receiving metrics, courtesy of Next Gen Stats. Although hes a big, physical WR who is good at contested catches, he is also fast enough to blow past some DBs when going vertical. By DJ Siddiqi. Richardson also has good hands, and I think his somewhat low career catch percentage (58.7%) is more a function of running deep routes than any lack of pass catching ability. This play shows good awareness by Richardson to read the defense and split the defenders, as well good speed (notice how quickly he runs by them) and good ability to locate the ball and adjust to it. If Carson Wentz can return to his 2017 form and stay healthy for 16 games, this Eagles receiving crew could lead the division in statistical production. Despite pass interference from the CB (and what looks like an uncalled facemask penalty), McLaurin fights through the contact to make a tough catch and get the first down. Basically everything about this matchup is tilted in McLaurins favor, and I think its the type of matchup he isnt likely to receive now that teams have had a look at him. [1:52] Slayton lines up bottom of screen on the outside. He also tested extremely well at the combine, achieving a 95th percentile SPARQ score. As miserable as that 2020 season was for the Cowboys, he still had 92/1,114/5. The only reason I put him below elite is that he rarely faced double teams, but was neutralized by them when he did. [1:46] This play is one of two that is very representative of how Cooper gets open. This is one of those plays that shows even when Jeffery is covered, hes open. McLaurin gets a poor angle on the block because of the DBs speed, but nevertheless uses his strength to hold his man in place and eventually follow him to the ground, forcing the defender to reach out for an attempted shoestring tackle. In this section, well offer a look at a few of the top players in the division, with an analysis of their styles, skills and limitations written by Andrew York, who has volunteered to co-author this series with me. His only real weakness to me is that he depends on physicality to get open quickly, as he lacks the short area quickness to get open purely based on acceleration. Such questionable play at the QB spot led me to wonder how the dependent receivers are fairing under such unsteady conditions. Just a few years ago, the NFC East was chock-full of high profile wide receivers. Your login session has expired. Of course, no position group consists of just one or two players. With Dak Prescott healthy, this offense could be fun to watch. CeeDee Lamb is running away with this award. Tate is a good route runner, an extremely reliable catcher (2nd fewest drops among WRs in 2018), and most importantly is one of the NFLs best WRs at getting yards after catch (YAC). This division has new faces all around, and some of the best talent in all of football. However, note that this play seems designed explicitly to get the ball to Cooper. His only obvious weakness is as a blocker in run support, where he doesnt quite have the strength and physicality to excel. Derek Barnett has a very similar skillset to Brandon Graham. During his first two seasons, McLaurin has proven himself as a true No. To prepare, we at Chargers Wire are previewing players from every position. Watching tape of Tate really reinforced what a YAC monster he is. 4 in the division but have several talented pass-catchers. He is also a much tougher and higher-effort player than I had previously realized, able to hang on to make contested catches, and often reaching forward after contact to gain a few extra yards. Right now Slayton is relying almost entirely on his athletic traits to find success, which is enough to get him pretty far against some teams, but limits his versatility and allows him to be shut down by the more athletic CBs in the NFL. Everyone can ignore this (and more to follow). However, I think Slayton has a very high ceiling and could be really good if he continues to develop. NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah joined Chris Brown and Steve Tasker on One Bills Live from the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. [2:08] Here is another example of using excellent body-positioning to box an opponent out, but this time against a much better opponent: Julian Love (taken by the Giants in the 4th round of the 2019 draft). Cowboys: Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, CeeDee Lamb, Cedric Wilson, Simi Fehoko That top three of Cooper, Gallup and Lamb might be the best trio in the NFL. NFL passing games want quick-hitting routes rather than long developing ones downfield. Brown has been dominant on tight-window throws this season, with a career-high 273 yards on such targets (second in the NFL behind George Pickens). Sterling Shepard, the Giants 2016 second-round pick, has probably not yet lived up to the high expectations that surrounded him when he was drafted, but he went for 872 yards and 4 TDs in 2018. Before we dive in, though, a note on our methodology: To help create quantifiable rankings, we have devised a formula that yields a Next Gen Stats percentile score, which measures how a player is performing relative to his peers. Since joining Josh Allen and the Bills, Diggs leads the NFL with 2,953 receiving yards when aligned wide, and his 1,077 yards on hitch routes over that span are 370 more than the next-closest player (Tyler Lockett, 707). Its a big change from the pre-Gettleman Giants, who, for a while, fielded one of the highest-profile receiving groups in the league. July 25, 2021 1:56 pm MT. Another WR on the same boundary runs vertically to clear out the DB there, leaving Reagor with a lot of open grass in front of him as he receives the short pass. Odds & lines subject to change. As was the case in his rookie season, Chases bread and butter has been passes thrown outside the numbers, where he ranks sixth in the NFL with 515 receiving yards this season. He still doesnt have the short-area-quickness or suddenness to juke DBs out of their shoes, but he showed better ability to get open in tight spaces using fakes and body positioning. I wanted to include this play for 2 reasons. Playing on a loaded Ohio State offense, McLaurin only caught 35 passes in 2018, but did a lot with his opportunities (20.0 YPR average). Slayton still just runs past them and gets several yards of separation, doing a great job looking back and tracking the ball in the air to get a long reception for a TD. This week, we've assembled a list of the top 10 wide receivers heading into Week 15. The suddenness with which Cooper changed his direction and the degree to which the CB committed deep make it impossible for the CB to redirect in time, and Cooper gets open for an easy catch. We will lean on this formula to inform our rankings when applicable. Darby is a much better (and faster) CB than Douglas and runs with McLaurin down the sideline, but Terry turns back at just the right time, quickly locates the ball in the air, tracks it, and reaches out to make a very tough contested catch. 2. Even better, he displayed strong hands, winning quite a few contested catches. In his college tape, he almost always corralled balls into his body after getting several feet of separation from DBs. I respectfully disagree with one aspect of this otherwise fine gallery Jeff Chadiha has put together of the NFL's top 10 wide receivers. The NFL's top 16 wide receivers Teams AFC East Bills Dolphins Jets Patriots AFC North Bengals Browns Ravens Steelers AFC South Colts Jaguars Texans Titans AFC West Broncos Chargers Chiefs. He has surprising physicality for his size, often fighting through contact on a contested catch to get extra yards. The addition of Samuel in the offseason gives the team another dynamic option who can take it to the house anytime he touches the ball. March 1, 2023 2:19 pm PT. Click here to see all the Ranking the NFC East articles. JJ has an extensive bag of tricks, using good fakes and foot quickness to get open at the release and good body positioning to make tough, contested catches. Brown, Philadelphia Eagles. Justin Jefferson can lay claim to the title of being the best receiver in the NFL. However, he fared better against those CBs than Amari Cooper. In addition to that, he had a bit of a college injury history, missing several games to injury his sophomore year, then redshirting his entire junior year due to a torn ACL. When you pair those two together with Slayton, Shepard and another former first-rounder in Ross, all of a sudden, this is a great receiving corps. NFC Players By Position - Wide Receiver. His biggest problem is his drop rate, which will need to improve in the NFL if he is to become a trusted target of Carson Wentz. Slay is in position to easily break the pass up instead. All other NFL-related trademarks are trademarks of the National Football League. Ceedee Lamb is the best performing rookie by some distance. He is a smart, high-effort player and among the best in the NFL at his position. Although McLaurin isnt able to get much separation from Slay, he is able to body Slay out and break open just as the ball reaches him. Richardson is very much a team player, and will always do his part in a play, even if the ball isnt going his way. Updated Jan 5, 2023 at 10:27pm. Tier 1: Elite 1. At 61 and 211 lbs, he also has very good (though not elite) size for a WR. Washington: Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, Dyami Brown, Kelvin Harmon, Adam Humphries, Cam Sims. After watching both WRs in those matchups, I think the difference was McLaurins physicality and ability to win contested catches. He was traded to the Cowboys in the middle of last season (the 4th year of his rookie contract) for a 1st round pick in 2019 draft, and Cooper had an immediate impact, seemingly jump-starting the Cowboys offense and helping them to a division championship. And J.J. Arcega-Whiteside seems like he was chosen to be the eventual replacement for Alshon Jeffery. Washington Commanders. Washington Football Team v Dallas Cowboys. At the Combine, he had posted a very good 4.42s 40-yard dash (showing good deep speed), but also produced an elite 6.71s 3-cone drill (agility), and 3.98s 20 yard shuttle (acceleration). CB #21 (Ronald Darby) looked fast enough to run with Slayton and almost caught him at the end. At the bottom of the depth chart, Watkins, Hightower and J.J. Arcega-Whitesid might be in a battle. This ends up being a running play for Adrian Peterson, who breaks his run to McLaurins side of the field. Jeffery rewarded Cutlers trust with two 1000-yard seasons in his first 3 years in the NFL, though he hasnt been able to replicate that production since, due to repeated nagging injuries he seems to suffer every year. He committed to Stanford, and although red shirted in his freshman year, became an increasingly important part of the offense after that, catching 63 passes for 1,059 yards in 2018 (top 5 in the nation). NFC East. This play really shows off Slaytons physical traits; hes got speed, acceleration, and quick change-of-direction ability for days. Last off-season, Hogs Haven published articles that focused on ranking position groups in an effort to identify what the division would look like in 2019. However, I noted he had a few flaws in his game that I thought would cause him problems. Commanders; Cowboys; Eagles; Giants; . Watching tape of McLaurins 2019 season, it became clear that other teams saw him as the number one threat in the Redskins passing game. He had two years remaining on his $72 million contract. Goedert like the rest of the Eagles offense has been up and down but with rookie QB Jalen Hurts finally being ushered in as the starter expect the young QB to look for Goedert as a safety blanket when things are not going his way. Last month, the former LSU star surpassed another legendary Vikings receiver -- none other than Hall of Famer Randy Moss -- for the most receiving yards in a player's first three seasons, and he has only added to that total over the last couple weeks. [0:38] McLaurin does a good job blocking on this play, eventually blocking his guy to the ground. However, his best athletic trait isnt his deep speed so much as his short-area quickness. The Allen-Diggs connection leads all QB-receiver duos with +61.0 expected points added this season, helping the Bills surge to the top spot in the AFC entering Week 15 and giving both players plenty to be thankful for. He grew in almost all of those areas as a WR in his first year, putting to bed my concerns about how he would translate to the NFL. He does a good job of positioning his body to box out CBs and gives himself the leverage advantage in making plays on the ball. But the problem is when the book is written that a wideout cant get off the jam, the opponent knows this as well. Undersized at 510 and 199 lbs, Tate doesnt quite have the measurables of a WR1, but excels as a WR2. Golladay will finish his Giants career with 43 receptions for . [10:15] Richardson absolutely blows past his CB running deep. The New York Giants have a desperate need at the wide receiver position this offseason. Richardsons injury history served as prologue to his time in the NFL. I thought he wasnt as shifty as one might expect for a player so fast, he was a body-catcher rather than a hands-catcher, and he relied too much on out-athleting his opponents using speed or physicality to get open, which wouldnt necessarily work at the next level. That is a difficult habit to unlearn at this point in his development, though I saw enough hands catches to think he can develop. He doesnt do it often enough to be a big issue, but maybe because his cuts are so sharp, he seems to trip himself up and miss out on extra yards now and again. Terry McLaurin flashes elite traits, but has enough problems in his tape that I can see why he fell to the 3rd round. Because you know what happens when a rookie receiver enters the league? Best Wide Receiver Duo (Douglas DeFelice-USA TODAY Sports) There are many potential choices for the best receiver pair in the game today. [9:35] Gilmore again lines up opposite Slayton at the top of the screen. Despite missing four games with a hip injury, Chase still manages to be all over the receiving leaderboards this season. Very few players in NFL history have immediately dominated the way Jefferson has since entering the league in 2020. By releasing Golladay, the Giants save $6.7 million against their salary cap. Gilmore is on top of him the whole way and cuts back just as hard as Slayton, wrapping him up as the ball gets to him and knocking the ball away. It also helped the other players on offense by giving them easier matchups and complicating the Lions defense (if Slay had to travel, then other DBs had to travel or adjust their responsibility accordingly). The Commanders are interviewing former UCLA receiver and head coach Karl Dorrell for their WRs coaching vacancy, per source. Also, Im not sure how much this will translate to the NFL, but I literally saw Reagor yelling at his QB after some plays where he expected a different read or better ball placement. Dallas Cowboys. They respect his deep speed and he takes advantage by breaking inside on a crossing route with nobody around him. Dak breaks to his right (Coopers side) almost immediately after the snap despite little pressure and is looking for Cooper the whole time. Cooper working with Dalton and practice squad players has put up respectable numbers while McLaurin working with a revolving door of quarterbacks has emerged as a leader and playmaker in the culture Ron Rivera is trying to implement. Its really impressive. Reagor has weaknesses though. This play highlights Coopers ability to make tough catches, as well as the awareness and body control to keep both feet in bounds for the reception. Oh, and adding CeeDee Lamb to the mix certainly does not hurt. 1 option. Overall, I think Terry McLaurin is a somewhat raw WR who flashes elite traits and potential, but will probably take a while to see the field on offense, except as a one-dimensional deep threat. [4:15] This is a well designed and executed pick play where Richardson springs Vernon Davis open for a huge gain. However, JJ has tremendous ability to stay open even when covered, using his big body, long arms, and good hands-catching ability to reach out and grab the ball out of the CBs reach, even with very little separation. Although big, long, and strong on tape, his 40 time was a surprise to many who saw him as lacking deep speed. However, this makes him a poor matchup on physical CBs like Josh Norman who can shove back harder. Minnesota Vikings. Since entering the league in 2021, Chase leads the NFL with +720 receiving yards over expected, as he has consistently been among the leagues best players at his position. The Dallas Cowboys could sign their division rival's top wide . This play shows excellent route running ability, strength, and effort, though it would be nice if he trusted his hands enough to make the catch without using his body to corral the ball. [9:18] Tate lines up outside this time, fakes an out route, but then redirects to run deep and accelerate quickly while CB Anthony Browns head is turned to the QB, allowing him to get yards of separation and an easy catch that he turns into a TD. [2:35] Richardson lines up outside (bottom of screen) behind the line of scrimmage. He looks like he has all the size, speed, acceleration, ball tracking, and sharp cutting ability to be great in the NFL. Having a terrific big muscular body for the position and running a great 40-yard dash time are wonderful attributes, but it doesnt always translate to success in the league. Non-Redskin fans could be forgiven if they were unfamiliar with Cam Sims, Trey Quinn, Terry McLaurin and Kelvin Harmon, though the latter two, taken in the 3rd & 6th rounds of Aprils draft, got a lot of good press during the pre-draft buildup this year. This is an example of the trouble Cooper has when facing off against top CBs who are as athletically gifted as he is and arent afraid of getting beat deep. He makes a perfect hands catch, reaching out and securing the ball away from his body (and away from the DB), then tucking it under his outside arm to run. [3:49] This time, Love wins the matchup, getting a hand in to break up the pass. 1 spot over Tyreek Hill Position Power Rankings 2022 NFL season's top 10 wide receivers: Justin Jefferson reels in. With this improved play expect a jump in production for all NFC East receivers in the upcoming 2021 season. In the end, if a wide receiver has everything else you want at the position but cant consistently bring the ball in and gain yardage, he isnt much good to his team. Dorrell was most recently the head coach at the University of Colorado. He doesnt need a lot of subtlety here though, his athletic traits are what allow him to win. Then Richardson makes a great leaping catch, highpointing the ball and securing it at maximum extension away from the DB. In addition to football, in high school he was all-state in basketball and placed highly in track. This play shows Slaytons deep speed, ball tracking ability, and ability to haul in long passes. However, starting QB Shawn Robinson decided to transfer to Missouri after the 2018 season, leaving the Horned Frogs scrambling for a replacement. Again, Slayton does the basic job necessary to run his route and make a play, but doesnt employ any subtlety or counters to beat a CB as athletic as he is.
